The Guestbook
March 11, 2008So there is a guestbook in the shop that people sign. It’s interesting to see how varied the locales are that people who stop by the shop come from. This was an interesting one:
Here’s a loose translation provided via someone on one of the local forums:
“ Well, it is Japanese, but the majority of the letters are Chinese:
Directly translated they mean: One(first) Period(time?) One(first) Visit(Meet)
First time visitor, maybe? It may be an expression I do not know
however.
The last two letters says: “Most(best) High”
A praise for a first rate or highest quality good/service, I am sure. “
And a follow-up translation:
“I did some research and am now 99.5% sure that the first four letters mean
“Once in a life time encounter(meet/visit, etc.)”. Apparently, the first two
letters say “Lifetime” by themselves.
And the last two Chinese letters simply say “The greatest” as I said before. “
And now Burry gives us the rest of the story:
“ This Japanese couple come into Neilson’s Shop, they speak NO Engrish and i speak no Yapanees!
He points to a board he has in the back of their rental car.
He starts looking at small Potato chip type boards, checking by feeling thickness and weight etc. she just smiles!?
They leave for 1/2 hour!?
They come back …he looks at more Potato chips, she smiles.!
and as they start to leave again i motion for them to sign the “Book”!
He mumbles something and starts to write in the book,,,She smiles and giggles!!!???? and then off they go!
Fifteen minutes later he comes back and buys a leash!!!”
So to make a long story short, don’t forget to sign the guestbook!
New FCS “Fusion” fin plugs
March 10, 2008I have been wanting to comment on the blog about the new fin system that fcs just came out with. It is a figure eight donut looking insert that is put into poly or eps foam and makes the fcs fin system as strong or stronger than any other fin system. Go to fcs website if you want more info directly on this system. Typically on eps boards we only use future or lockbox. Now with this new system you can go with fcs as well. This is nice if you already have a good selection of fcs fins and may make it easier to choose a eps/epoxy board in the future.

This is a pic of David Lawless’ new 6′4 stringerless epoxy surfboard pre-glassing. Have finally got it together with a new glasser, that is perhaps the best in the business bar none, to glass my stringerless eps epoxy boards. The last several boards we have made have come out just absolutely sick, super strong and the same lightness as our previous eps/vacumn bag boards. These are also improved, if that is possible, because we have solved the only weak area which is the edge having a seam. So these do not have a rail seam - eliminating this potential weak area on our previous boards. So, super stoked on these boards and our team riders are raving about their performance in the water as well. If your looking for a made in the USA super durable, light surfboard - then look no further. One of the new improvements is you can get one in normal time as a poly 3-5 weeks, not months as before! They cost $595. and are a great price especially when you consider that they are all hand made not a pop out, the amount of material/cloth, and are 100% epoxy and are made by the best craftsmen in the world. We are calling this new version of epoxy stringerless surfboard - “razor” to give it a new and improved associated name!

Who is that guy?
February 12, 2008Maybe your wondering who that guy is that is always launching on just about every wave he rides? Well, that guy in the photo for the blog and in most of the other shots you have been seeing of Wabasso, the Inlet, Spanish house, etc. ….is….”Special K” also known as Stephen Kaltenbach. He currently is riding a new template 5′11 squash with a really nice full concave. The board is custom for him with specific rails and thickness flow. If you want one of his models then ask for a Special K model and get out there and start busting some air, lips, you name it…
